I fully understand where you are coming from, especially in a rural area. That said, my feeling is if everyone is running around armed, rather than decrease the number of innocent people who get shot, you're gonna increase it. That is becuase many people act impulsively and don't fully think of the consequences of their actions in the heat of the moment. Not to mention, there are plenty of assholes (like this guy) and mentally unstable folks who are now carrying. But I still get your point, my friend.
