I get where you're coming from, but in my humble opinion, Pence is no hero. He simply preformed a duty that was required of him by law. He was still a Trump sycophant until they firmly rejected him, and even then - he still tries to appease them. He'd be strongly rejected by the Republican base, and the more moderate Repubs (should they ever have a say again) would not want someone tainted by the Trump presidency.
