That’s a great question actually. While I suppose its quite natural for religious leaders to take a rather conservative posture to protect their gig, I am not aware of any taking the extreme kind political stand we’ve seen here. That said, part of the motivation to come to America, was allegedly to avoid religious persecution in Europe. In the US, we have a long history of political BS in the clergy — think “Salem witch hunts.” The anti-semetic, pro-fascist ramblings of Father Coughlin in the 1930s, also come to mind.
